Saxon Lee

Saxon Lee & The Shadows International were born out of The Martins Brothers Dance Band, which was originally based in Port Harcourt. They started back in the 1960s and made afrobeat part of their repertoire, quite soon after Fela began his string of hits with Africa 70. Mind Your Business was first released as a shorter 45 version on Decca’s Afrodisia Records before being re-recorded on this LP from 1973. The singer Pax Nicholas later went on to record a solo LP (Na Teef Know de Road of Teef) for Tabansi records.

Fela Ransome Kuti

Speaking to the African Concord magazine in 1988:

“In 1969 I was completely almost unintelligent because I had no original African contribution to make...An African meeting an Englishman should have something to offer. He shouldn’t be offering an English thing to an Englishman...Africans should be taught to be able to contribute their own mind, their own culture, their own philosophy. Coming back from America in 1970, I then knew that I should not try to impress foreigners. I should impress my own people first. When my people accept me then foreigners will see a need to accept me. They will now appreciate my music”.

Fela Ransome Kuti

The recording industry in Lagos needed an injection of something in order to get the buzz back that had been missing since the early 1960s, before the war had started, and Fela was just the person to administer it.
Unbeknown to many Africans, American jazz, rock and soul musicians had begun looking to Africa and the wider world for new influences, and Fela realised that now was the time for Africa to respond. He believed passionately that what was needed in African music was a big dose of African culture, and that domestic music had become far too sterile in its approach and not African enough by any stretch.
