The Booma Rockers were a London house-band put together by a young producer and songwriter from Guyana, Terry Nelson aka Omar Farouk. Nelson released approximately thirty 45s on his labels Halagala, Booma and Rude Boy in the late 1960s and early 1970s before returning home to Guyana to start a successful and well loved TV station.

The majority of the records were of the ska and rocksteady persuasion but one or two stick out as being slightly different.

‘Soul Food’, a super weighty instrumental soul / blues / funk b-side was released in 1969/70 on Rude Boy Records featuring amongst others Ghanaian saxophonist and vocalist Teddy Osei (who went on to form the Afro rock band Osibisa). ‘Booma Woman’ was also a B-side in a more reggae-funk style released possibly a year later featuring vocalist Jean Manix.

Both have been out of print ever since and are re-released with the Nelson families’ full permission.

Nelson was a very popular and well-loved figure in Guyanese society and many of his songs have become nationalist and political songs that have become part of the national psyche.

The 7” vinyl is limited to 1000 copies and comes with a free MP3 download of the release.

Soundway continue their journey into Colombia with this limited edition 45 featuring two bolts of Colombian dancefloor thunder. Both songs were originally released on the legendary Discos Tropical label and are re-issued here for the first time out of South America. Side A features a version of the party standard ‘Tequila’ by Orquesta Tropicana. Blaring horns, hand claps and shouts for tequila combine for a Latin dancefloor classic. Side B is a version of the legendary Fania salsa track ‘Lluvia con Nieve’ that was originally released in 1964 on the New York label. Sonora Tropical re-recorded the track for Discos Tropical and has remained unavailable outside of Colombia until now.

King Kennytone, trumpeter and stalwart of the Nigerian Highlife scene of the 50s and 60s was the foremost purveyor of African twist in the early 60s. Following the massive dance craze of The Twist in the US and UK in 1961/2, Kennytone recorded his African Twist numbers at the same time in both English and Igbo. As with later imported styles such as soul and funk many broadcasters and journalists of the day criticised him for being concentrating on music that wasn’t African in origin but his records were huge hits and endure to this day (especially with the recent resurgence in late ’50s and early ’60s black Rock n’ Roll and R&B).

This sweet soul inspired double header harks back to Panama in the late 60’s, a time when musicians fearlessly combined and brilliantly executed styles that reflected their multicultural environment.

‘Moving Grooving’ and ‘Hiko Iko’ are both ultra rare hand clapping, foot stomping soul workouts courtesy of the Greaves brothers, Frankie and Franklyn. ‘Moving Grooving’ is featured on Soundway Records’s third release in the Panama series titled Panama! 3, compiled by Quantic and Roberto Gyemant AKA Beto.

Both tracks were originally served up on a super limited 45 on Segraves Records in 1969 and and highlight the massive influence of American soul music on musica Panameña during and after the black power cultural movement in the US. A reference to the early work of the godfather of soul, James Brown, may seem a tad lazy but it’s about as honest as it gets.

‘Moving Grooving’ is featured on Soundway Records’ latest album:

Panama! 3 – Calypso Panameño, Guajira Jazz & Cumbia Típica on the Isthmus 1960–75

ULTRA HOT PANAMANIAN 7” WITH BONUS TRACKS NOT FEATURED ON SOUNDWAY’S LATEST LP PANAMA! 2

A. The Soul Fantastics – El Mismo
B. Los Silvertones – El Baile De la Araña

Both tracks featured on this very rare and limited release offer a glimpse of the unique tropical music created in Panama during the fertile decades of the 1960s and ‘70s.

The choice of tracks was heavily influenced by the collectors, DJs and Latin music aficionados that Roberto Gyemant, compiler of the Panama!2 album, met during his digging through dusty Panamanian warehouses and visiting of old radio stations in the Panamanian outback. These tracks are near impossible to find on original vinyl!

The Soul Fantastics flute driven track “El Mismo” is a dancefloor driven soul workout with heavy influences from the States. Jazz flautist Felix Wilkins leads the charge and therein takes the track to a huge crescendo lending itself to the same school as the 1971 stone cold b-boy classic ‘Burning Spear’ by S.O.U.L. The original breaks and beats of Panama!

Los Silvertones do their thing with their “spider dance”, ‘El baile de la Araña’ – a bossa funk driven jam, sure to provoke some heavy hustling in the discotecas.”

The 7” release coincides with the latest CD/DLP album on Soundway Records:
